Ronald Fisher'ın The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection adlı eseri, Mendel genetiğini Charles Darwin'in doğal seçilim kuramıyla bir araya getirir. Fisher, "Mendelcilik, bu bakımdan Darwinizm’i tasdik eder" sonucuna varan ilk bilim insanıdır ve mutasyonlarla ilgili olarak şunları belirtir: "Büyük mutasyonların büyük çoğunluğu zararlıdır; küçük mutasyonlar ise hem çok daha sıklıkla ortaya çıkar hem de faydalı olma ihtimali yüksektir." Böylece Fisher, ortogenez görüşünü çürütmüş olur.
