Past continuous veya past progressive, İngilizcedeki sürekli zaman yapılarından biri. Geçmişte belirsiz bir süre boyunca gerçekleşmiş olay ve durumlardan bahsederken kullanılır. Standart olumlu bir cümle kuruluşu şu şekildedir:
Subject + was/were + present participle
- He was watching TV.
- The children were doing their homework when I got home.
Olumsuz cümle kuruluşunda yardımcı fiilden sonra "not" zarfı eklenir:
- I was not talking about you. (Wasn't şeklinde kısaltılabilir.)
Standart bir soru cümlesinde yardımcı fiil cümle başına gelir:
- Were you cooking when I called last night?
"Present perfect continuous" ile karşılaştırma
| ]Eğer eylemin ne kadar zamandır devam ettiği belirtilmek isteniyorsa present perfect continuous kullanılır:
- I have been watching television for two hours. (present perfect continuous)
- I was watching television when you called. (Eylemin süresi önemli değil.)
