Orr, Biyoloji ve Felsefe alanlarında lisans derecesini William ve Mary Koleji'nden, Biyoloji alanında doktora derecesini ise Chicago Üniversitesi'nden aldı. Chicago'da 'un öğrencisi oldu. Kaliforniya Üniversitesi, Davis'te doktora sonrası araştırma yaptı.
