Herpestes, Herpestidae familyasına ait bir kuyruksüren cinsidir. Familyanın tip cinsidir ve birkaç alt türle birlikte on canlı türü içerir. Bilimsel adı Herpestes, Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger tarafından 1811'de önerildi. 1887'de soyu tükenmiş bir tür tanımlandı.

Özellikler
Yaşayan Herpestes türünün erkeklerinde, bir Y kromozomunun otozoma transloke edilmesi nedeniyle dişilerden bir kromozom eksiktir. Cinsel olarak dimorfiktirler, dişiler erkeklerden daha küçüktür. Ağırlıkları 0,6 ila 3,6 kg (1,3 ila 7,9 lb) arasında değişir. Tüm bireyler yalnız yaşarlar.
Taksonomi
Soyu tükenmiş , Fransa kökenlidir ve muhtemelen Alt Miyosen'e kadar uzanmaktadır.
