En İyi Sinematografi Akademi Ödülü kategorisinde 1939'dan 1967'ye kadar, 1957 yılı istisna olmak üzere, siyah-beyaz ve renkli sinematografiler ayrı ödüllerle değerlendirilmiştir. Bu dönemden sonra bu kategoride ödül kazanan tek siyah-beyaz film Schindler's List (1993) olmuştur.
