  1. ^ Michael Schumacher set the fastest qualifying time, but started the race from the back of the grid after stalling on the second formation lap. Pole position was left vacant on the grid. Mika Häkkinen, in the second slot, was the first driver on the grid, but Schumacher is still considered to have held pole position.
